2020 UK route
The 2020 edition of One More City was planned to start in Strasbourg and finish in Salzburg. Due to COVID-19 that route has been postponed until 2021, guidelines permitting. However, fundraising for secondary breast cancer is more important than ever due to cancer treatment and research having been postponed and stopped during the pandemic.
With weeks and months of planning and then re-planning and in the spirit of the OMC riders and community, and expertise of Velusso we rode a UK edition in September.
Starting and finishing in Kings Cross in London, we rode in groups of 6, across 14 English counties, clocking up 750k, 7,000m of climbing over 4 days.
Day 1 was the longest, a rolling 240k from London to Appleby Magna in Leicestershire. Getting back on the bikes the next morning was tough, so we were much relieved to be facing a shorter day, with a large portion of flat, disused railway lines through the Peak District. Alas, in true One More City style, the weather had another idea, and we battled a headwind most of the day. We arrived into Ironbridge in Shropshire exhausted but buoyed by the fabulous countryside we’d cycled through. Day 3 was the climbing day, starting with a 20% ascent out of Ironbridge 1k into the ride. The narrow country lanes kept us on our toes, but the views from the top of Clee Hill made it all worthwhile. Sudeley Hill, just out of Winchcombe was another test of the legs. We arrived into Buckland in Oxfordshire for our last overnight stay of the trip, at the wonderful Mollies Motel. Day 4 took us through the Chilterns and North London, and full circle back to Kings Cross where we had started four days ago.
Although it was not the overseas adventure we’d all hoped for, what a delight it was to discover some beautiful home roads and towns. And although we had a smaller group than previous years, we still managed to raise over £20,000 towards our current campaign, a huge accomplishment in challenging times.
