2024 Venice to Rome

2024 was the eighth edition of the annual One More City ride, continuing off from the 2023 ride ending in Venice, 37 riders completed this four-day ride from Venice to Rome. Over 4 days they covered a total of 740km, and climbed over 7,000 meters of elevation. This event supports the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London, where we are currently fundraising for a Clinical Research Fellow focused on secondary or metastatic breast cancer. Our target is £250,000.

Day 1: Venice to Ravenna

The journey began after a shared evening in Treviso, with the 36 riders of OMC24 setting off on the longest leg of this year’s challenge: a 213-kilometer ride to Ravenna. Rolling terrain and relentless headwinds tested everyone, especially those tackling their longest ride ever. Teamwork became essential, as riders took turns leading the group, braving the wind before recovering in the pack. By the time they arrived in Ravenna, exhaustion was matched by a deep sense of accomplishment, their spirits buoyed by the collective determination to conquer the 740-kilometer challenge together.

Day 2: Ravenna to Carpegna

The second day brought the riders their first taste of some infamous climbs, and it didn’t disappoint. The journey to Carpegna was punctuated by the steep, winding ascent to San Marino, a climb that tested endurance but rewarded effort with stunning views. The challenge didn’t end there, as the group faced Mount Carpegna, a grueling climb famously used by cycling legend Marco Pantani during his training.

With its punishing gradients and relentless switchbacks, Mount Carpegna pushed riders to their limits. Yet, through determination and the encouragement of their fellow cyclists, everyone made it to the summit—most with smiles! The descents provided a welcome reprieve, offering breathtaking scenery

Day 3: Carpegna to Rome - ‘the Queen stage’

This was the ride’s crowning day: 174 kilometers and a staggering 2,300 meters of climbing. It was a test of endurance, patience, and fortitude. The weather added to the drama, with road surfaces that proved as challenging as the steep ascents. Yet the riders persevered together, motivating one another to keep going. Their efforts were rewarded with spectacular views from Gianicolo Hill in Rome—a triumphant end to an unforgettable day. Each kilometer pedaled brought the riders closer to their destination and closer to making a difference in the fight against secondary breast cancer.
